Praying for Mali

Isaiah 9:6–7 – “And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.”

Matthew 9:37–38 – “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Romans 10:14–15 – “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”

• Mali has faced deep turmoil since 2012, marked by three military coups, jihadist violence, and ethnic conflicts between Fulani herdsmen and farming tribes. Islamist and Tuareg rebellions displaced nearly 500,000 people, including most Christians in the north. Elections have been postponed as the military regime struggles with instability, while the Islamic State now controls parts of the southeast. Amid these overlapping crises, Christians face increasing hardships. Pray for peace, stability, and God’s protection over His people in Mali.

• Most Malians practice a moderate, West African blend of Islam that often mixes in traditional beliefs and folk practices. Foreign aid, especially from Libya and Saudi Arabia, strengthens ties to Islam. In Bamako, more than 3,000 Qur’anic schools and marabouts educate about 40% of children, shaping their worldview from a young age. Pray that Muslims in Mali will have opportunities to hear about Jesus, encounter him and be saved.

• The Christian population in Mali has not kept pace with the nation’s rapid growth, with evangelicals declining proportionally from 0.91% in 1990 to 0.69% in 2020. Many converts return to their former faith due to weak follow-up and limited discipleship. Although there are nearly 700 evangelical congregations, most are not actively engaged in evangelism. A lack of resources for training pastors and supporting outreach efforts remains a major challenge. Pray for Malian churches to be filled with boldness and passion for the lost, for renewed commitment to evangelism and discipleship, and for a fresh movement of the Spirit like the revival of the 1980s.

• Many Christian agencies are active in Mali, serving through church planting and evangelism (Avant, CAPRO, World Venture), relief efforts, community development (soil, water, vegetation conservation), education (UWM), digging wells, and medical outreach (CMA, Allianz Mission). These ministries meet both physical and spiritual needs, and the door remains open for service. Pray for God to bless these efforts and to send more workers into the harvest field in Mali.
