Essentials for Spiritual Encounters
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to
another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Genesis 28:10–22; Exodus 3:1–6; Luke 24:30–32
Recurrent Thought
Spiritual encounters occur when God reveals Himself and the human heart responds appropriately resulting into life changes (transformation).
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through spiritual encounters. These are moments when ordinary people meet an extraordinary God. These encounters mark turning points. For example, Jacob is changed at Bethel, Moses is called at the burning bush, Isaiah is cleansed in the temple, and the disciples are revived on the road to Emmaus. A spiritual encounter is not just emotional encounter. It is a divine meeting that produces transformation. Genesis 28 shows us that Jacob left home as a deceiver, but after meeting God, he rose with a new vision, a new fear of God, and a new direction.
Here are three essentials of spiritual encounters
1.Encounters Require Divine Revelation
- Prayer and worship are common triggers of Spiritual Encounters. Intense Prayer in the Holy Spirit, in tongues, is essential in enlarging our spiritual capacity for receiving encounters. 1 Cor. 14:4 says the Spirit is edified, built up and capacity enlarged. You are more sensitive to the Lord when you are in time of prayer
- However, we must state categorically that no true spiritual encounter begins with man searching for God, but with God revealing Himself to man.
- Jacob was not praying; he was running. Yet God sovereignly revealed Himself. The ladder represents God initiating contact between heaven and earth. This shows grace: God meets people even when they are unaware or unworthy.
- In Scripture, every true encounter begins with God’s self-disclosure. For example, Moses in Exodus 3 and Isaiah in Isaiah 6.
- Everywhere God reveals himself turns into a Cathedral, the Seat of Yahweh. Jacob used a stone for a pillow, but God turned that hard place into a holy place.
- God can turn a lonely place into a sacred space. Exodus 3:2–6; Matthew 16:17; John 6:44
- One essential aspect to note is that God often reveals Himself when life feels uncomfortable and uncertain.
- Encounters begin when God reveals, not when man deserves.
- God expects me to Seek after Him, but I must trust His initiative. We must be attentive even in ordinary moments.
2.Encounters Produce Spiritual Awareness
- Encounters floods you with spiritual awareness. It makes you behold his Manifest Presence.
- Jacob suddenly realized that God was present all along. The fear described here is not terror, but reverence. Awareness of God’s holiness produces humility and repentance.
- When God reveals Himself, the right response is holy fear and humility.
- In Hebrew thought, fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- We must understand that an encounter without reverence is incomplete. Encounters awaken reverent fear
- When Isaiah saw the Lord he cried, “Woe is me!” (Isaiah 6:5).
- True encounters reveal not only who God is, but who we are.
- Spiritual encounters are precursors for change, because where God is truly encountered, reverence is unavoidable and change is inevitable.
- Encounters may even begin as ordinary occurrences but with significant impact.
- Therefore, we should not treat God casually. We must recognize His holiness and ensure to replace awe (reverence, honor, respect) over familiarity
3.Encounters Result in Life Changes (Luke 5:8–11; James 1:22; Rom.12:1)
- Every genuine encounter with God demands a response: It could be obedience, dedication, affirmation, worship, praise etc. It is these responses that are critical to our transformation
- For example, for Jacob, He made a vow.
- Jacob’s vow shows that encounters are not only experiences; they lead to commitment. He set up a pillar, worshiped, and pledged his future to God. While Jacob’s faith was still immature, his direction had changed.
- Encounters that do not lead to appropriate response, such as obedience, are incomplete encounters.
- The disciples on the road to Emmaus said,
- An encounter with God always calls for a response. From every encounter, God calls transformed living.
- Encounters are critical in our walk with God. Observe that worship follows revelation while commitments follow convictions.
- Responsive Obedience gives meaning to spiritual encounters.
Conclusion
Spiritual encounters are not rare events for special people; but they are divine moments for surrendered hearts. However, we should not only seek an experience but God of encounters. And when He reveals Himself, we must respond with reverence, affirmation, obedience, and a changed life.
