The Impact of the People around Us

2 Timothy 4:9-22

Recurrent Thought

Every fulfillment of a vision demands the support of other people. However, People come are fickle and can sometimes disappoint

The achievement of your purpose in life, demand the support of various types of People. The truth is that when you become aware of your Purpose in life, the unique reason for your existence, you will also realize that you cannot fulfill such a purpose by yourself. Vision is your preferred future (targets) that helps you move towards the fulfillment of Purpose. While Assignments are a collection of tasks in Life Journey you do from time to time, which in turn help you to achieve your Purpose. For these to be achieved, You need the involvement of others. The scriptures call it the favor of God.

Favor is divine enablement, where God in Partnership with human beings provide help to your life and destiny. God blesses you, but he does it through others. People are avenues through which God blesses People. They are a few ways when God sends blessings mysteriously and sovereignly without the use of people. God normally uses people to bless people.  This is what is called Favor. Favor is when God grants a person specific destiny-impacting support through human instrumentality. Favor is when people invest time, resources, and credibility in their life and destiny

Paul's closing words in 2 Timothy are much more than personal greetings. They provide a window into the relationships, values, and priorities that shaped the apostolic ministry. There are various themes that the passage exposes to us such as fellowship and partnership, failure and restoration, teamwork, suffering, loneliness in ministry, God's sustaining Presence and others. We decided to look at this text biographically, by looking at the encounters of these people with Paul. This is obviously simplistic; however, this approach allows us to see the impact these people had on the life of Apostle Paul

Historical Background

Paul is imprisoned in Rome for the second time (about AD 66–67). Unlike Acts 28, this imprisonment is much harsher. He is sitting in a Roman prison awaiting execution under Nero. The great missionary who planted churches throughout the Roman Empire now sits nearly alone. He has no crowds. No conferences. No applause. Only a prison cell.  He expects execution. These are his final recorded words before martyrdom. The passage contains over seventeen (17) personal names, showing that Christianity is relational. Ministry is always accomplished through people. Yet people can either encourage or disappoint. As Paul reviews the people around him, he reveals five categories of relationships that every servant of Christ will eventually encounter.

In this passage, (4:9–22) Paul opens his heart and allows Timothy to see the people who surrounded his ministry. Some abandoned him. Some remained faithful. But above every human relationship stands one unchanging reality: God never leaves us. This passage teaches us that ministry is never about perfect people. It is about a perfect Savior working through imperfect people.

  1. Those who deserted him (4:9–15)
    • Not everyone who begins the journey with you will finish the journey beside you. One of ministry's or your visions deepest pains is not persecution from enemies. It is abandonment by friends.
    • Demas Loved the Present World (v.10)
    • 2Ti 4:10  For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.
    • Demas was not an outsider. He had traveled with Paul. Paul previously called him a fellow laborer. Yet something captured his heart. The Greek word for "forsaken" means to abandon completely, to leave helpless. Notice what Scripture does not say. It does not say Demas stopped believing. It says he loved something else more.
    • The world became more attractive than the work. Ministry became costly. Comfort became desirable. The cross became heavy. The world looked easier. Demas and many who backslide reveal the danger of Spiritual Drift. People rarely leave Christ suddenly. They drift because another love slowly replaces their first love.
    • Jesus said,"No man can serve two masters." Love determines loyalty. Once again the illustration of a ship on the sea is very applicable here. A ship rarely sinks because of the water around it. It sinks because of the water is allowed inside it. The church can live in the world. The tragedy begins when the world begins living in the church. We must Guard our affections. Our greatest danger is not persecution. It is misplaced love.
    • Friends in ministry or in business can let you down and never care for you
    •  Alexander Chose Opposition (4:14–15)
      • 2Ti 4:14  Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.
      • 2Ti 4:15  Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message.
      • Alexander was not merely absent; he became an opponent. Paul does not describe personal revenge; he simply warns Timothy. The phrase "did me much evil" speaks of deliberate hostility. Some people actively resist God's servants. Paul leaves judgment with God. The Lord reward him according to his works. He refuses bitterness. Justice belongs to God (Rom. 12:19; 1 Peter 2:23)
      • Similarly, David refused to kill Saul even though Saul pursued him. Faith trusts God with justice. Not everyone who opposes you deserves your resentment. Many deserve your prayers. All deserve to be placed into God's hands. Leave room for God's justice instead of making room for personal revenge.
  2. Those who went On Assignments (4:10–12)
    • It is essential to know that in your life journey some companions, leave but not with bad intentions. Not everyone who leaves has deserted. God may move His servants to other locations
    • Some are simply reassigned. Paul distinguishes between Demas and faithful coworkers. Some departures are painful. Others are providential. Never confuse God's transfers with betrayal. Sometimes God moves people to enlarge His kingdom.
    • Crescens is not mentioned anywhere in the scriptures. But we are told in this text that he went on a strategic missionary assignment to Galatia. Early Church Traditions claim that he later served as a Bishop in the region of Galatia.
    • Titus: was a spiritual Son to Apostle Paul who he sent on assignments and later got stationed at the Island of Crete as a Pastor. Titus was a trusted Gentile co-worker and disciple of the Apostle Paul who played a vital role in the early church's expansion. As a troubleshooter and administrator, his primary mission was to resolve conflicts in Corinth, organize relief funds, and establish church leadership across the Mediterranean. Titus was a symbol of Grace, because Titus was an uncircumcised Gentile who had received the Holy Spirit, Paul used him as a test-case to argue that salvation was by grace, not adherence to Jewish law. He went with him to the Jerusalem Council included in Acts 15, which dealt with the issue of Gentiles and the challenge of legalism.
    • Tychicus
    • Tychicus was a trusted and loyal companion of the Apostle Paul. He served as an early church missionary, diplomatic courier, and pastor. He is mentioned five times in the New Testament, frequently entrusted with delivering Paul's letters and reporting on the apostle's well-being while imprisoned. He is Paul’s trusted Companion who first appears in Paul's third missionary journey as a traveling with Paul back to Jerusalem (Acts 20:4). He escorted Onesimus (the runaway slave mentioned in the Book of Philemon) back to his master. It seems Apostle Paul frequently sent Tychicus to oversee churches or fill in as a temporary leader, relieving other leaders like Timothy (2 Timothy 4:12) and Titus (Titus 3:12) so they could visit him. Paul respected him so much, note what he writes about him:
    • Col 4:7  Tychicus will tell you all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord
    • Not every goodbye is abandonment; sometimes it is responding to a divine assignment.
    • We should never confuse God's transfers with betrayal. Many God moves people to enlarge His kingdom
  3. Those Who Served with Him (9, 11, 13, 19–21)
    • God always provides faithful people for faithful ministry.
    • Luke is a Friend that Stayed (v.11):
    • Paul sounded very emotional when he wrote that Only Luke is with me. Luke remained.
    • This is a closest friend and ministry associate. He is a The physician who became a dear and closest covenant friend. He is the Historian who wrote the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. We are not told when he Joined the Apostolic Team. But we see his Presence in the second missionary trip. He was in the third Apostolic Trip; he was around when Paul was arrested in Jerusalem, and later travelled to Rome to be with him. We are not told when he travelled to Rome, but Paul clearly shows that he is with him in his last phase of life just before he was executed.
    • When others disappeared, Luke stayed. Although, he does not receive the equal commendation as Paul, he stayed with him the longest. Faithfulness often receives little attention. But heaven notices its consistency.
    • Barnabas was known as the son of encouragement and Luke quietly practiced that same ministry.
    • You may never preach to thousands. But you can stay beside someone who does and faithfully, support them as they do.  Faithfulness often accomplishes more than giftedness. We must note that Luke is remembered and celebrated because he stayed. Great servants are remembered because they stayed.
    • b.  Mark, A Restored Associate (4:11)
    • “Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.”
    • Mark, also known as John Mark was a cousin to Barnabas who mentored and sponsored Paul before the Apostles. This John Mark was one of the members in the first Apostolic team but he did not finish the tour of duty for he ran away. Mark abandoned Paul and Barnabas. However, when they considered to go on a second Missionary trip, Paul refused to take him on the missionary journey. Their differences were so sharp that they separated (Acts 13 &15). Barnabas took John Mark and went to Cyprus and the Antioch Church blessed Paul and sent him forth on the second mission trip. Somehow John Mark was restored to the and his giftedness, relevance became obvious to the end that he was now recognized as be useful. At this stage, everything had changed and his usefulness shone brightly to an imprisoned Paul. Failure is not final; Grace restores one to usefulness.
    • The story of John Mark is like the one for Peter who at one time denied Jesus Christ. But Jesus restored him. We must know for a fact that preaching the Gospel is a ministry of restoration. Never write off someone whom God is still writing about Today's failures are tomorrow's faithful servants. Grace gives second chances where pride gives final verdicts.
  4. The Saints He Remembered (19–21)
    • The Next List Paul remembers people whose facts we don’t know about. There is no biographical information added to their names inserted except a few. They are ordinary people
    • Prisca and Aquila:
    • He sends Greetings to Prisca & Aquila faithful couple he ministered with in Asia Minor.
    • They were tentmakers who were left Rome due to Emperor Claudius’s edict expelling Jews, they settled in Corinth and then later Ephesus. In both cities, they opened their homes to establish early Christian meeting places. They are the ones who mentored Apollos a powerful evangelist who needed discipleship.
    • Onesiphorus
    • He greets people in the household of Onesiphorus. Who was he? He was a believer in Christ based in Ephesus. He was a faithful and courageous Christian from who is recognized for bravely supporting the Apostle Paul. His name literally translates to "bringing profit" or "useful.” When Paul was imprisoned in Rome, it was highly dangerous to associate with him. Many believers in Asia abandoned Paul, but Onesiphorus actively sought him out, refreshed him, and was not ashamed of his chains.
    • Paul recognizes four other People as being Believers in Rome who sends greetings to Timothy. These have no historical facts attached to their names. This includes Eubulus who is not mentioned in scriptures and early traditions do not state anything on him. Next is Pudens. He has no account in the scriptures. However, Early church traditions list him as one of the seventy disciples and an early Roman senator. Then we have, Linus who also has no facts in the NT but Early Church Fathers wrote about him.  Historians like Irenaeus and Eusebius state that Linus later succeeded the Apostle Peter to become the very first Bishop of Rome (effectively the second pope). The last person in this list is Claudia is linked to be the wife (or Mother) of Linizeus.
    • Recognize & Celebrate Others
    • Paul took time to recognize People that supported and served with him. These seem to be names without any significance. This is a recognition of their identity. These are people who mattered. Christian ministry is relational and no believer is insignificant. Every servant’s contributions is worth celebrating. Heaven records names, but usually the world forgets. We should never underestimate quiet faithfulness. God measures greatness differently than people do.
  5.  The Lord Who Sustained Him (4:16–18)
    • 4:16-18 is the theological center of the passage. Apart from the People who served him, the Lord sustained him in this extremely worst scenario of his Life.
    • 2Ti 4:16  At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them!
    • 2Ti 4:17  But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth
    • Three Traits worth mentioning
    • The Lord who stands with Us (4:17)
      • There is a significant observation Paul made. At one time he remained totally alone. Even faithful friends cannot completely sustain us. Eventually every believer must learn Paul's greatest lesson.
      • Human support may disappear, but divine presence never departs.
    • Paul stated that during his trial, People abandoned him, but the Lord stood with him. Everyone else left; but Jesus remained. Notice that Paul uses courtroom language.  His earthly defense failed but His Heavenly Advocate never failed. This is a reality for all of us. People may disappoint you but Christ never will. Know for a fact that When everyone else walks away, Jesus steps closer. Psalm 46: states that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
    • The Lord Strengthens Us (4:17)
      • In this time of abandonment, the Lord strengthened him. Paul's strength did not originate inside himself. It came from Christ (Philippians 4:13; Isaiah 40:31).  God does not always remove weakness. He gives strength inside weakness. God's strength begins where human strength ends.
    • The Lord Secures Our Future (4:18)
      • 2Ti 4:18  The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
      • Paul knew execution was coming yet he said the Lord shall deliver me. Deliverance did not necessarily mean escaping death. For Apostle Paul deliverance meant arriving safely in glory.
      • Death did not defeat him. It merely transported him home. This our sure foundation of our Faith. Death is not the end of our existence, but a passage to another existence prepared for all who believe in God. Missionaries throughout history died in faith because they knew heaven was certain. Believing in a secure existence after death is the Hope that keeps believers in Christ.

Conclusion

People are the avenues of Gods Help to Us. You are also the avenue God Uses to bless Others. Be available when God calls you just as you would want others to be available for your Vision fulfillment
