HOUSE OF GOD

CHAPTER ONE: THE GARDEN

Eden was a paradise where God could walk and converse with man, After the Fall of Man, access to God was primarily through a building. First it was a tent, and then a Temple. God had designed the Tent and the Temple to resemble the Garden of Eden.

  1. The Presence of God: In Eden, God "walked" with Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:8). Similarly, the Temple (and the Tabernacle before it) was the place where God’s presence uniquely resided on earth.
  2. Priestly Role: Adam was placed in the garden to "work it" and "keep it" (Genesis 2:15). In Hebrew, these same verbs— abad and shamar—are used throughout the Torah to describe the specific duties of the Levites and priests in guarding and serving the Temple.
  3. The Design:
    • The interior of Solomon’s Temple was decorated to evoke the Garden. It featured carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and flowers (1 Kings 6:29). The massive pillars at the entrance were adorned with lilies and pomegranates, and the golden lampstand (menorah) was designed to resemble a flowering almond tree, effectively turning the interior into a sacred forest.
    • The Tripartite Structure: Both spaces are often described as having three degrees of holiness: Eden: The outer world, the Garden of Eden, and the central place (where the Tree of Life/Tree of Knowledge stood). Temple: The Outer Court, the Holy Place, and the Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies).
    • Guardian Cherubim: Just as cherubim were stationed at the east of Eden to guard the way to the Tree of Life after the Fall (Genesis 3:24), two massive, gold-covered cherubim were placed inside the Holy of Holies, guarding the Ark of the Covenant, which represented God's throne.

Jesus re-establishes Access to God

1. Promise of the Holy Spirit (John 16:7)

2. Matthew 27:50-51: and Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up His Spirit. The Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

3. Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) The Holy Spirit comes

God’s presence was now no longer in a building but people. Peter said in 1 Peter 2:5 "You also, as livingstones, are being built up as a spiritual house...".

The Apostle Paul makes a similar, famous declaration in 2 Corinthians 6:16 ("...for we are the temple of the living God") and 1 Corinthians 3:16 ("...you yourselves are God's temple").

There are also similarities to emphasize Christians as the new temple of God. For example Jesus in John 7:38 speaks of rivers of living water flowing from our hearts, the same way water flowed from God's presence in Genesis 2:10, in Revelations 22:1-5.

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT GOD

My personal reflection has been that it has always been about God, and not Me. I have just been a vessel of God's presence. Gods wonders through Temple Scripture records breathtaking moments where God did astonishing wonders to validate His dwelling place on earth. Here are beautiful examples of God doing wonders specifically because of and through His temple:

  1. The Sudden, Supernatural Defeat of Sennacherib’s Army King Hezekiah took threatening letters, went straight into the temple of the Lord, and spread them out before the Ark (2 Kings 19:14). He prayed based on the fact that God’s name dwelt in that building. The Assyrian Army defeated (2 Kings 19:35)
  2. The Healing Splendor of the New Covenant Temple "The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them(Jesus)." Matthew 21:14
  3. The House of Obed-Edom (Blessed for 3 Months) 2 Samuel 6:11 I am here for his service and to obey His commandments. Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind

MY ROLE

To "Work and Keep" (The Priestly Role) Adam and Eve were placed in the garden to "work and keep" it (Genesis 2:15) same as the priests in the temple (Numbers 3:7-8). Some of the duties include:

  1. Cultivate: As the new temple, my life, my gifts, my business, and my church community are my "garden." My role is to cultivate them to bring forth fruit.
  2. Keep the Fire Burning: In the physical temple, the priests ensured the lampstand (Menorah ) never went out. My role is to maintain my personal spiritual fire burning.
  3. To Be the "Image" of the King In the ancient world, when a king conquered a territory, he would erect a stone statue (an image) of himself to declare his sovereign rule over that land. He created You and me as His image (Genesis 1:27). Reflect the Owner.

THE WARNING

In the Old Testament, God’s presence was never tied unconditionally to a building. When the people traded relationships for rituals, the Glory departed.

1. Familiarity like Uzzah. The son (or grandson) of Abinadab. The ark of God stayed in their house for more than 20 years (somewhere between 40-70 years). Uzzah and his brother built a cart to transport it, then he died when he was trying to steady it. 1 Chronicles 13 and 2 Samuel 6.

2. The Glory Moves Out (Ezekiel) In the book of Ezekiel, we see a literal, step-by-step vision of God's presence leaving Solomon’s Temple due to the rampant idolatry practiced right inside the sacred courts (Ezekiel 8).

Same with recent examples in the new testament While the Holy Spirit seals a believer, Scripture explicitly warns that disobedience, pride, and operating on our own terms heavily impact how God's presence manifests in and through us:

1. Grieving the Spirit: Paul warns us, "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God" (Ephesians 4:30)

2. Quenching the Fire: Just as the temple priests had to keep the fire burning, we can "quench the Spirit" (1 Thessalonians 5:19)

3. Losing the "Lampstand": In Revelation, warning to the church at Ephesus. They were warned: "Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place" (Revelation 2:5).

Takeaway

  • A building can be beautifully decorated, highly active, and full of people—just like Solomon's temple or the church in Ephesus—while structurally remaining entirely empty of God's glory.

Conclusion

  • God in His sovereignty chose man as a dwelling place here on earth (House of God). We are here to keep and protect the temple for God. It has always been and will always be about God.
